Natural Health: Cough & Flu Remedies


Your throat has a little tickle and feels tight. Your sinuses are raw. Youʼre tired and achy. Maybe you have a fever. We have all experienced that sinking feeling when you realize you are getting sick.

It seems so strange that while my husband and I may share the “same” illness, our symptoms arenʼt always the same. His colds go immediately to his chest, with lots of coughing and wheezing. Mine go to my sinuses and throat and I lose my voice. Other symptoms may be the same, but some are unique to each of us. Our approach to dealing with illness is also unique...I prefer to use safe, natural remedies.

Have you ever used ginger to stop an oncoming respiratory illness? In his book Herbal Antivirals, Stephen Harrod Buhner extols the medicinal actions of this familiar root. He advises its use at the first signs of illness. It can “cut down sick time to 3 days or less and the episode will often be mild”. Even if the illness has already taken hold it helps to relieve symptoms and shorten duration.

Buhner gives these recipes: Juice a root about the size of a medium to large carrot. Combine 1/4 cup of the fresh ginger juice with 12 ounces hot water, 1 tablespoon wildflower honey, the juice of one-quarter of a lime, and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne. Drink 4-6 cups per day. If you donʼt have a juicer this alternate method works as well...Grate or chop a root about the size of your thumb as finely as possible. Steep in 8-12 ounces of hot water for 2-3 hours, covered in order to preserve the essential oils in the tea. Drink 4-6 cups daily. Acting as a strong anti-viral herb ginger also calms nausea, reduces diarrhea and stomach cramping, reduces fever, chills and bronchial inflammation, thins mucus and relieves cough. Buhner believes gingerʼs analgesic relief is equal or better than ibuprofen. **Large doses should be avoided in pregnancy**

Did you know that horseradish can be used to clear up congestion? Finely grate a fresh root. Place in your hands or a small bowl. Cupping your hands around the grated root, inhale deeply through your nose. Hold for four counts and exhale. Repeat. You can also take the freshly grated root and mix it with enough apple cider vinegar to make a paste consistency. Place 1/4 or 1/8 teaspoon in your mouth, slowly chew and swallow. Breathing deeply through your nose while doing so. Both methods work but the first is a little less painful.

Onions for a cough? Chop onions and place in a glass or stainless steel pan. Cover with raw, unadulterated honey. The honey should be at least 1/2 inch above the onions. Heat with low heat (under 130˚ or below). This can also be done in a double boiler. Cook until onions are clear. Strain and press out the liquid. Use as a cough syrup by taking a teaspoon into the mouth and holding it as it slowly trickles down the throat. It may be used every 15 minutes or half hour, as needed. To make this act as an expectorant or demulcent (relieving inflammation) cough syrup you can add licorice root powder or horehound herb, or wild cherry bark. This should be done before heating and in the amount of one ounce of herb to each pint of honey.

Natural Health: Cleanse & Nourish

 


Why am I sick? Have you ever wondered that? I certainly have and it is a question with no easy answer. After doing a little research online regarding an illness or disease condition, you may feel enlightened or overwhelmed. Probably a little of both! How do you sift through all the information and then make wise decisions regarding treatment?

I made the decision to pursue knowledge regarding herbal healing and enrolled in online classes. Initially I was dismayed and irritated to discover that the early focus of my education wasnʼt specifically about herbs. I gradually came to appreciate the Vitalist approach to healing...look on the body as a whole and discover what malfunctioning area is causing the disease condition. I have learned that illness/disease doesnʼt exist in a healthy body and that the body is always trying to return to a state of health. The force of all that I am learning is summed up in “Cleanse and Nourish”.

Cleanse
This idea is to assist the body in eliminating the toxins that have accumulated. We all have them as a result of poor eating habits, prescription medications, personal care and household cleaning products, environmental contaminants, nonorganic foods... The list is long. By taking the time to clear out the toxins we help our bodies to return to a state of health. The four main channels of elimination are: respiratory, digestive, urinary and skin.

The first area to address is the colon. This is usually the bodyʼs first choice for “housecleaning”. There are various ways of approaching a cleanse but the simplest is to purchase a cleansing program. Many people are amazed at how much better they feel after a colon cleanse! You will probably want to continue working through the other areas of elimination with a Liver and Gallbladder Cleanse, Urinary Tract Cleanse and even a Blood Stream Cleanse.

Nourish
You need healthy food to build a healthy body. There are soooo many differing ideas on what makes a healthy diet. After spending considerable time looking into the enumerable dietary recommendations and reading the testimonials of those adopting them I decided they all had one thing in common...get rid of the junk and eat nothing to exclusion and excess. It is all about wise choices and balance. If you occasionally have a sweet treat it isnʼt going to hurt, but if you have that same treat everyday with breakfast, lunch and dinner (oh! snacks too) it is going to effect health.

To nourish is also to provide your body the help it needs to heal a particular area. An example of this for me is CoQ10. As a Chronic Lyme sufferer my heart skips and jumps when I donʼt supply this needed nutrient. Will I need it forever? I hope that by providing a nutrient needed for function and healing I will eventually be able to stop using it. There are many supplements and herbs specific for your area of disease or weakness. Ask a knowledgeable person or do some research and help your body through this form of nourishment.

Product Highlight: AHCC Mushroom


How are you doing this “flu season”? As I watched my friends and family succumbing to some nasty viral infections I wondered what could be done to prevent them. Meet Dave!


 Hello everyone!  My name is Dave Knott and I am pleased to be the Assistant Manager here at Apple Wellness.  About myself, I have been working in the Health and Wellness industry for almost eight years now.  I began my journey working at GNC where my interest propelled me into management for seven of those years.  Having a positive impact in the lives of others has been the single most rewarding part of sharing my knowledge, and really what drives me to learn more.  As an athlete my whole life, I became interested in nutrition health once I noticed the significance it had for my overall well being.  For this reason, I excel in the exercise science category, where I believe in proper training and supplementing.  Throughout the years I've developed training programs from endurance fitness through strength training.  My knowledge has helped everyone from high school sports athletes through major lifestyle transformations.  On top of my career track, I began school at the University of Wisconsin Waukesha and will have an Associates of Science Degree this year.  I've also been enrolled in the University of Wisconsin system for Business Management as a transfer student.  For the past five years I've switched my athletic focus to the sport of triathlons; swimming, cycling and running.  My wife and I enjoy hiking, cycling, sight seeing, traveling abroad, and above all serving in the community and with our church.  Look for ongoing posts about specific supplements, and feel free to stop in for evaluating your program.  I'm always amazed at how the smallest changes can result in exponential results!
